The Edgar County Shrine Weekend is coming up soon, and local residents can look forward to familiar events and faces as the Edgar County Shrine Club raises money for the Shrine Kids.
Events of the weekend include a truck and tractor pull, the Shriner BBQ, the parade and of course the demolition derby.
The weekend kicks off at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 13, with the Truck and Tractor Pull at the fairgrounds, alongside a fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. at the American Legion, sponsored by the Edgar County Shriners. Attendees to the tractor pull can expect “hot tractors and hot trucks,” according to 2024’s event president, Rick Dodd.
On Saturday, June 14, the Shrine Club will begin serving its famous barbecue at 11 a.m. They will serve until they are sold out. As in recent years, they will be serving drive-thru only, with some picnic tables nearby for those who want to enjoy their meal at the fairgrounds.
At 2 p.m. on Saturday, the parade will start at the Legion. The parade will head south down Central to Blackburn, where they will turn left and then come back up N Main Street to end at the Legion. Traffic will be stopped on those roads for the duration of the parade.
The Demolition Derby, held by Gearheart Motorsports this year, will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday evening. Admission is $15 per person, and children under 10 years old get in for free.
This year, the event includes a new Gut-n-Go class, in hopes of making it easier for more entrants to participate. Registration for the derby will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. and costs $20 per car.
Throughout both days, vendors will be open at the fairgrounds, which will be open to the public all weekend.
According to Dodd, the Shrine Weekend events have previously raised the $250,000 that was then donated to the Shriners Hospital’s research wing last year, and he hopes that this year’s events will raise even more.
