Edgar County state’s attorney resigns, Dobelstein to fill vacancy

During an Edgar County Board study session on Monday, Jan. 8, chairman Jeff Voigt revealed that Timothy Gilbert, Edgar County state’s attorney, has inked a resignation letter effective Wednesday, Jan. 10. Assistant state’s attorney Philip Dobelstein is slated to fill the role and will be sworn in later the same day.

According to the letter, dated Dec. 22, 2023, Gilbert is accepting a new position with the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy in Danville, Kentucky.

During the study session, Voigt assured the board that the various duties of the state’s attorney would be covered in Gilbert’s absence. Dobelstein and the Edgar County Board are actively searching for candidates to fill the assistant state’s attorney position, which will be vacant after Dobelstein transitions to his new office.

“He (Dobelstein) has several people that have expressed interest,” said Voigt. “He's hopeful that he can make the change and get that taken care of as soon as he can.”

Filling the position will be critical in keeping pace with the county’s heavy caseload.

“It will fall way behind without an assistant pretty quickly,” said Voigt.

Dobelstein is already running as a candidate for the state’s attorney's office in this year’s election cycle.
