Paris launches Beautify Project to support property cleanups

A new initiative aimed at helping residents clean up and improve their properties was introduced last month by City Commissioner Doug Hasler.

The initiative, called the Beautify Paris Project, will provide free dumpsters to residents tackling exterior cleanup projects. Hasler, who is spearheading the effort alongside code enforcement officer Irv Pinkston, said the city will cover the cost of the first dumpster and, if used in compliance with project guidelines, a second dumpster may also be provided.

“We’ve had a lot of activity in clean-up and tear-down around town, and we’d like to see even more,” Hasler said. “This program is a way to spur more interest. We’re just going to give it a try and see if it helps.”

The dumpsters are intended specifically for the removal of outdoor debris—not yard waste. Once a yard is cleared, residents may also use the dumpster for certain indoor items. Each participating property will be eligible for up to two dumpsters annually.

Pinkston will work directly with each applicant to assess the size and number of dumpsters needed, based on the condition and clutter around the property. Dumpsters will be delivered free of charge and picked up approximately seven days later.

“In my dealings with people and efforts to clean up the city, the biggest drawback has always been expense,” Pinkston said. “Many families are just trying to keep up with groceries and bills. When that’s the case, cleanup efforts get pushed aside. So when the idea of city-funded dumpsters came up, a light-bulb went on.”

Both Hasler and Pinkston emphasized the project is a grassroots effort to empower residents to take pride in their neighborhoods, while recognizing that not everyone has the same resources or support.

“Our goal is for people to do it themselves if they are able,” Hasler said. “But if someone needs help, we’re ready to make connections and try to find support.”

Pinkston echoed the sentiment: “There are people who are still trying to live in these homes and do the right thing. This goes a step beyond demolishing vacant houses. If they can use a dumpster to help beautify Paris, then that’s what we’re going to do,” he said.

Residents interested in applying for a free dumpster should contact Pinkston at Paris City Hall.
