Girls tennis team honored
Tigers girls tennis officially closed a 3-11 season with a recent banquet and awards program.
“Despite the record, I felt like the girls showed a lot of improvement this year,” said coach Stefan Aydt. “Two of our wins were against Urbana and Mattoon who we hadn’t beaten in several years, so that was nice.”
The tough season for the Lady Tigers included play against three sectional champions and one runner-up. In addition of the 12 schools played, eight of those teams qualified at least one player for the state tournament.
“We were up against some stiff competition,” Aydt said.
He added the biggest accomplishment of the season was Kaylee Landsaw earning second team all-conference by finishing third in singles at the LIC tournament. Other accomplishments included the doubles team of Sarah Isaf/Kaitlyn Mathews taking third in their flight at the Casey Doubles Tournament. Also, the JV team had a record of 3-1 in their full meets, which Aydt regards boding well for the future.
“We had over 30 girls out for the team this year, and I’m really proud of how hard all of them worked,” said Aydt. “I think a good number of them will be back next year, so I’m looking forward to watching them keep improving.”
All players received numerals, patches and/or letters. Special award winners included:
Emma Campbell (JV Most Improved); Sarah Isaf (JV Points Winner [player with most JV wins]);
Chloe Waltz, Chloe Noel and Elizabeth Brown (Effort Award); Taylor Evans, Lexy Burton, and Gracie Rhoads (Leadership Award); Kaitlyn Mathews (Varsity Most Improved); Sydney Martin (Tiger Award [best teammate]); and Kaylee Landsaw (MVP and Varsity Points Winner [player with most varsity wins]).
