Ilse Smilie, 96, passed peacefully in her home at Brookstone Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021.

A memorial service will be held in the future.

She is survived by her children, Dal Smilie of Helena, Mont., Kathy Smilie of Paris and Richard Smilie of Houston, Texas; and her brother, Werner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Smilie.

Mrs. Smilie taught kindergarten in Vermilion, Vance and Crestwood for a total of 37 years. She also taught science at Shiloh. She could hardly go anywhere without running into one of her children. After retirement, she stayed active with the Edgar County Chapter of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association.

She emigrated from Germany at 18 months with her family, escaping the hyperinflation that followed World War 1. They arrived just in time for the Great Depression. She was always glad to find a German speaker so she could stay fluent.

Mrs. Smilie had an inquisitive mind and earned many post master’s credits. She loved art and science. She could identify any plant she found or any constellation she saw. Life remained wondrous

She enjoyed her twilight swims from her lot on the Twin Lakes on hot nights. She was active with the local Audubon Chapter and the Hoosier Backpackers Club. She backpacked all over the U.S., Canada and much of Europe. She backpacked well into her 80s.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sutton Senior Center or Faith in Action.
