Local paramedics, law enforcement and firefighters responded to the scene of a single-vehicle rollover at approximately noon on Tuesday, Jan. 9. The vehicle’s driver suffered only minor injuries, despite initial reports that she was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Some accounts have surfaced of bystanders who witnessed the wreck stepping in to save a second, younger occupant from the vehicle.

The driver was transported away from the scene of the accident via Horizon Health ambulance for further evaluation. Emergency responders briefly closed down the road near the site of the accident at the intersection of Illinois Route 16 and 725th Street, just east of Kansas.

As of 12:40 p.m., the northern lane of Route 16 was open.

According to an Edgar County Sheriff’s Department deputy on the scene, the accident occurred as the driver attempted to pass another vehicle.

“She was overtaking another car and lost control,” he explained to a Prairie Press reporter.

The vehicle exited the roadway and entered a ditch before hitting a culvert and flipping over.

Emergency personnel successfully extracted the driver from the vehicle and are working diligently to clear the scene.
